Using Both Is: Shiitake Mushroom Log Kits

Download this press release as an Adobe PDF document.

Consumers can grow their own shiitake mushrooms, which grow wild on the Asian "shii" tree and are now cultivated on oak logs. Shiitakes strengthen the immune system and contain the antiviral compound interferon. Lost Creek Mushroom Farm produces log kits.

Perkins, OK (PRWEB)December 3, 2003 -- Shiitake" has two ‘is because for centuries the mushrooms were harvested in the wild from the Asian "shii" tree for their delicious flavor, non-fat high protein content, and medicinal potency. Today they are grown on oak logs, available in shiitake log kits from Lost Creek Mushroom Farm.

Shiitakes have two important health properties, both of which start with the letter I: Immune system and Interferon. Shiitakes contain polysaccharides that stimulate and enhance the immune system. Interferon is a protein that attacks and kills viruses. In addition, shiitakes are known to lower both blood pressure and cholesterol.

Mushroom lovers can grow shiitakes in the family room or outdoors in the garden with a Lost Creek Mushroom Farm shiitake mushroom log kit.

The kits contain all-natural hardwood logs ready to grow mushrooms. According to shiitake farmer Doug Williams of Lost Creek Mushroom Farm, The logs will grow a crop every two months for three to four years. They need normal room light or outdoor shade. Soaking every two weeks keeps the mushroom cells growing inside the log, and shocking" it with ice water starts the mushrooms growing. They push out through the bark and are ready to eat in six to ten days."

Log kits are guaranteed and include instructions, a recipe booklet and a soaking tray.

Two logs will produce a harvest of shiitakes every month by alternating the producing log.

Large kits with trays are $43.50 for a 19-20 inch log, or two for $75. Small kits are $38.50 for a 13-14 inch log or 2 for $65. Prices include shipping and handling.

The Shiitake Sampler cookbook, at $6.95, has 51 shiitake recipes, ideal for enhancing the protein content of vegetable dishes and the flavor of meat and egg dishes.
