ICAO Issues Statement On Biometric Identification For Border Clearance Security Applications

Markland's Pending Acquisition of BioDentity Facial cognition Firm is Positioned to Benefit From Fast Growing Market for Facial Recognition Products

RIDGEFIELD, Conn. (PRWEB) June 13, 2003 -- Markland Technologies, Inc., an integrated security technology company, (OTC: MKLD - News), (www.marklandtech.com announced today that the recent selection of facial recognition as the blueprint by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) (www.icao.int for the integration of biometric identification information into passports and other Machine Readable Travel Documents.

Markland recently signed a LOI to acquire BioDentity (facial recognition) to compliment its current Biometric portfolio and help expand its current services at the US Borders.

In a comprehensive analysis performed by ICAO of various available biometric technologies, facial recognition rated the highest in terms of compatibility with key criteria, followed by the fingers and eyes. Border control and airline staff have long used the face and a photo ID as a means to confirm identity. Facial recognition technology automates this process, using a camera to capture the image of the face, while the computer validates identity.

The ICAO global harmonized blueprint for the integration of biometric identification information into passports and other Machine Readable Travel Documents (MRTD's) is intended to form a standard, which will assist all 188 Member States to implement a worldwide, standardized system of identity confirmation. Member States will have the option of using one or two secondary biometrics to supplement facial recognition for personal identification.

To date more than 700 million Machine Readable travel Documents have been issued worldwide and the numbers are growing rapidly. Although initially developed to facilitate clearance in airports, MRTD's with the new facial recognition procedures will be effective at seaports and land border entry points as well.

On May 09, 2003, Markland Technologies announced it signed a non-binding Letter of Intent to acquire BioDentity Systems Corporation. BioDentity is the first vendor to provide a comprehensive turnkey face biometric security solution - from image capture to processing - designed to enhance border control, aviation security and homeland security. BioDentity's SecurIDent facial recognition technology and ID2PASS person and document inspection systems can be implemented as primary security and clearance systems or added to any existing facial recognition system to enhance performance and reliability. BioDentity (www.biodentity.com) has a complete integrated suite of products that provide a comprehensive facial recognition solution.

Markland Technologies Chairman Robert Tarini, commented, "The ICAO decision is a milestone which will quickly fuel the growth for facial recognition products worldwide. BioDentity facial recognition products offer the user a complete set of solutions and highly differentiated performance. We believe that they are a fabulous fit with our long-term corporate goals."
