"Tales from the Storygenie" -- an all-new, all-original children's half-hour program filled with fanciful, fairy tale-like characters, bold colors, singing, dancing, jokes and stories, and 14 children under the age of 12 -- serves to stimulate literacy, language and learning skills while entertaining children ages 5 through 12. This combination of education and entertainment known as "edutainment" is now airing on 17 television stations around the country.
Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) August, 2003 -- "TALES FROM THE STORYGENIE" -- a fanciful, energetic, musical multi-media children's TV program for children 5 through 12 years old, starring all Las Vegas performers including five adults and 14 children ages 12 and under, has begun airing across the county under the banner of Tiger Eye Broadcasting Corporation (see AIRTIME SCHEDULE BELOW). This joyful and wholesome "fairytale set in Today" not only delights and entertains children with songs and dancing, riddles and rhymes, jokes, kid-friendly recipes, and much more -- it also nurtures a love of language and enhanced literacy skills through the building blocks of childhood literacy: rhyme, rhythm and repetition.
Storygenie Enterprises, the company which created the television program, produces correlating products such as hardcover "Tales from the Storygenie" books, music CDs and audiocassettes, DVDs and VHS tapes. The company donates a portion of the proceeds from "The Meanie Bug & Other Silly Creatures" (the first book in the Tales from the Storygenie "Silly Series" of six books) to childhood literacy programs, and the costumed character "Storygenie" volunteers in schools, participates in BookPALS (the national Screen Actors Guild program of Performing Artists for Literacy in Schools), and serves the under-12-group through on-line website activities, email and a fan club.
"Children today are the foundation for all of our society's tomorrows. Their literacy is their power to understand and master the world they live in," says Genie Corcoran, who created and portrays the Storygenie character and hosts the television program. "With national childhood reading skills weak at this point in time, 'Tales from the Storygenie' seeks to nurture children's literacy growth dynamically through education and entertainment ~ 'edutainment' ~ in a positive, uplifting and FUN way."
According to a study by the U.S. Department of Education reported in the National Assessment of Education Progress, only 8% of 4th grade students in America are reading at the highest level of performance. Less than one-third nationwide are only at or above the "proficient" level of reading.
The Education Commission of the States (ECS) states, "A person who is not at least a modestly skilled reader by that time [end of 3rd grade] is unlikely to graduate from high school" and, according to the National Center for Family Literacy, 2001 "Children with low literacy are more likely to drop out of school and turn to crime." The 2001-02 Chairman of the ECS also stated "Literacy is the key to learning ... and is the cornerstone of our education system, both at the state and national levels ... lawmakers, educators and parents everywhere [should] rededicate themselves to childhood literacy." That is the focus of "Tales from the Storygenie" multimedia products as well.
