WALTHAM, Mass. (PRWEB) September 4, 2003 — Winter Corporation, a leading center of expertise in large databases, announces that the Winter TopTen Program, a campaign to identify worlds leading databases, will conclude on September 30th. This high-profile program recognizes the implementations, products and technologies that are defining the frontiers of database scalability.

The TopTen Program is a survey-based global campaign with three major objectives. First, it identifies the customers whose achievements are advancing the boundaries of database size. Second, it identifies the products, platforms and architectures that are supporting the leading implementations. Third, it brings visibility to the organizations whose products and services are enabling the worlds leading data repositories.

To participate, a database must contain a minimum of 500 GB of data for Windows/NT platforms and 1 TB of data for all other platforms (database size excludes freespace and redundancy). Respondents complete a brief questionnaire on database size, workload and DBMS, server and storage environments. Award winners will be announced for 24 different categories defined by usage (transaction processing versus decision support), operating system and program metric (database size, number of rows/records/objects or highest workload).

The TopTen Program is being sponsored by Hewlett-Packard Company, Microsoft Corporation, Oracle Corporation, Sybase Inc. and Teradata, a division of NCR. Sponsorship identifies vendors with the frontiers of database scalability and underscores their commitment to addressing the most demanding database requirements. It brings well-deserved attention to the critical role the vendors play in the achievements of their largest customers. Moreover, it associates sponsors with Winter Corporation research and publications, the industrys foremost primary examinations of best practices at the worlds leading implementations.

Richard Winter, president of Winter Corporation, explained, To make critical decisions about architectures, platforms and implementation strategies, executives have to understand the frontiers of database scalability. The TopTen Program provides timely and authoritative information about where the frontier is now, where it is headed and how rapidly it is advancing. And perhaps most importantly, the program identifies the products being used successfully at the frontier."

According to Kathy Auerbach, research program manager at Winter Corporation, Vendors and end users are looking for ways to demonstrate their success with large-scale databases. They view the TopTen Program as a unique opportunity to show customers, prospects, analysts, the media and their competitors that they are meeting the challenge of decision support and enterprise data management."

Winter Corporation launched the Winter TopTen Program on May 1, 2003. Surveys will be accepted through September 30th and award winners will be announced at the beginning of November. In the last program, Winter Corp. received responses from 170 organizations representing a broad spectrum of industries in 30 countries.
