Thomas W. Dortch, Jr. founded the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame to increase public awareness for traditionally black colleges and universities.

Who is Claude Julian?

Claude Julian --creator of celebrity art--was a walk-on in baseball at Northern Illinois University, where he received Bachelor and Master's degrees in Painting & Drawing. He crossed the burning sands as a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (Mu Alpha Lambda Chapter)

After graduation, the Chicago native returned home to pursue his art career and his new pastime, modeling. With more than a hundred fashion shows to his credit in Chicago, Claude is proud of walking the runway in London, New York, Baltimore, Los Angeles, and at the 1992 and '93 Bronner Bros. International Beauty Show in Atlanta (one of the largest cosmetology conventions in the world).

In 1991, '92, and '93, he graced the catwalk at the prestigious Congressional Black Caucus Spouses Fashion Show in Washington D.C., and in 1995 he "hit the runway" in seventy-five American cities with the Vogue-Esquire Models of Chicago as they presented their 37th Annual Sepia Fahion Revue.

Claude also received international acclaim in 1995 as the spokesman for London-based Square Biz Records/Sujiro Productions at Midem--the Premier Music Market held annually in Cannes, France. Claude is the "Smooth Operator" featured in a national ad for Schlitz Malt Liqour, a former make-up artist for Black Opal Color Cosmetics, and was the professional commentator for the 1997 and '98 fashion show sponsored by GE (General Electric Co.) in Washington D.C.

Other achievements included his four years as the master of ceremonies for the finals of Budweiser's "Bud Girls Calendar Contest" held in Chicago, and in April 1998 he was celebrity host of the official U.S. party for the release of the book Models and Supermodels by British author Diana Dahlia at the famed Fashion Cafe in New York City.

Always staying focused as the creator of celebrity art, in February 1992, Claude unveiled his landmark exhibition, "The Greatest Show on Earth: A Tribute to Muhammad Ali," at Northern Illinois University. In January 1996, Madam C.J. Walker" and "Lights, Camera, Action II: a Tribute to Black Hollywood" were he unveiled at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago for Black Creativity--the most prestigious juried exhibition of African-American art in America. The Museum of Science and Industry awarded Claude a citation for exceptional ability.

On March 12, 1997, he unveiled a commissioned composition that celebrates the 100-year anniversary of Langston University (Oklahoma), and limited-edition posters were produced to remember this historic day. As part of the centennial celebration, he held an open forum with the students about this unique work. In June 1997 Claude presented one of his compositions from the Muhammad Ali Collection to Rasheda Ali on her wedding day at the renowned Jilly's Retro Club in Chicago. After Muhammad Ali witnessed Rasheda receiving this special wedding gift, his comment was "Perfect!".

Once again the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago honored Claude by selecting one of his compositions for Black Creativity 1998: "70: A Tribute to the 1996 World Champion Chicago Bulls." This work, 7 feet by 4 feet, honors the team's record-breaking season. For the second time, Claude was awarded a citation for exceptional ability. Because of Claude's desire to share his artistic insight he lectured (1997)during African-American Heritage Month. As a guest speaker at the College of Lake County (Illinois) his topic, "What is Celebrity Art?" provides an in-depth look into the lives of the rich and famous from a fine art perspective.

Tributes to Oprah Winfrey, Princess Diana, and the film "Waiting to Exhale" are featured in this presentaton of twenty-five slides that highlight some of the prominent people of the twentieth century. Also included in this presentation is a composition titled Nubian Royalty" that pays tribute to Michael Jackson's video "Remember the Time" featuring Eddie Murphy and supermodel Iman as the King and Queen of Egypt.

In 1999, Alabama's Governor Don Siegalman awarded Claude with a certificate of recognition of the numerous contributions that he has made in the area of the fine arts at the 5th Annual Conference on the African American Family in Huntsville, Alabama.

With Claude's creative focus always looking for new challenges, in 2001 he created Julian Theatre Company to spotlight up-and-coming playwrights. Toward that end, he executive produced the stage play "Save the Last Dance for Me," which received critical acclaim. He later executive produced and had a feature character role in "Back in the Day." Claude, inspired by playwrights who wrote about their own experiences, penned the stageplay titled "TIME TO MODEL" and in 2004, completed the screenplay for "TIME TO MODEL." In 2005 he launched his makeup website at www.onemodelplace.com/claudejulian. Claude has achieved 5 showcase image awards, done over 150 models faces and worked with some of the top photographers at www.onemodelplace.com.
