Eracent Customers Escape Grip of MyDoom

Users of Eracent's EnterpriseAM ITAM solution were able to locate and quarantine all systems in their networks that became infected with the MyDoom virus, almost immediately after the virus was began to spread.

Eracent Customers Escape Grip of MyDoom
Another Weapon Against The Virus Onslaught

Glenn Gardner, NJ (PRWEB) January 30 2004--Eracent Incorporated announced today that it was able to add the signature of the MyDoom virus to its EnterpriseAM audit tables almost as soon as the virus was discovered. Companies and government agencies using EnterpriseAM software to manage their IT assets were able to pinpoint every infected machine in their networks in a matter of minutes. They were then armed with the information needed to remove the infection or quarantine the affected machines.

Commenting on Eracents ability to respond to the newest cyber-threat, Walt Szablowski, Eracents CEO said "We make a point of adding the signatures of a variety of malicious code types to our audit tables on an ongoing basis. Our customers receive audit table updates daily, and more frequently if the situation warrants. We are very pleased to be part of an enterprises defense against these types of cyber-attacks."

Speed Was Critical

The MyDoom virus, which is also known as "Shimgapi" and "Novarg,", was first reported to have been detected at 1:00 PM GMT on Monday, 26 January. Since that time reports indicate that the virus has infected computers in over 142 countries, and that nearly 1 in 12 e-mail messages carry the virus. With e-mail now being the communications vehicle of choice among commercial enterprises and individuals, MyDoom set a new record for global infections. Responding to the threat, Eracent engineers built a signature file for the virus the day the virus was discovered and posted it to the companys massive software knowledge base. The virus signature was sent to Eracent customers shortly thereafter worldwide. Eracent also took the extraordinary step of personally notifying each of its customer contacts that the audit file was updated to identify MyDoom and that they could begin a scan of their networks to identify any infected systems.

Discover, Then Delete

Although EnterpriseAM is not specifically an anti-virus application, it plays a key role in securing the networks of Eracents customers. Said Szablowski, We know that all viruses dont come through the front door. Recently that have been camouflaged in applications, e-mails or are launched through file-sharing applications. As a case in point, reports issued today indicate that MyDoom copies itself to the directory that the Kazaa program is loaded, and replicates itself through the file-sharing application. Our technology scans the entire network, and through our advanced reporting system, alerts IT managers of the presence of a variety of viruses, malicious code and file sharing applications. By pinning down the location of the infection to specific computers and users, IT management can proactively act to remove the virus or quarantine the infected systems. By providing our customers with ongoing audit file updates, and scanning their entire network in near real-time, we can help IT managers detect and deal with cyber-threats before they become a crisis."
