In collaboration with the City and County of San Francisco UnwireNow and Terabeam announce San Francisco's first official WiFi network

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) October 4, 2004 -- UnwireNow, a San Francisco based wireless networking design and deployment firm has announced San Francisco's first official WiFi network. The wireless network is joint partnership with the Mayors Office of Economic and Workforce Development, the Department of Telecommunications (DTIS) and Information Services, the Recreation and Parks Department, UnwireNow, and Terabeam Wireless, a world leader in providing extended range, license-free wireless data equipment.

I am very pleased to launch this service in Union Square," said Mayor Newsom. San Francisco is one of the most technically-savvy, connected cities in the world. I believe technology can improve the lives of all citizens, especially through the tremendous amount of information available on the Internet," Newsom continued, Now, even more citizens have convenient, free access to that information in one of San Franciscos vibrant public areas."

"WiFi has become an unstoppable technology that the public is beginning to demand, customers are now making buying decisions based on the availability of WiFi" said Jaz Banga President of UnwireNow Inc.

The free WiFi service located in Union Square, San Francisco's most concentrated shopping and hotel area will encourage more visitors, demonstrate how wireless broadband technologies can support economic development and provide increased public access to high-speed Internet service. Starting with this pilot project, the Mayors Office has directed DTIS to work with city departments to develop a citywide wireless broadband policy and explore other opportunities to use wireless broadband services throughout San Francisco.
