The Omicron Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is celebrating its 80th anniversary with a series of events planned throughout the month of October. The events are: a panel discussion on October 7th on the significance of women in the upcoming presidential election, a reception on October 10th and a fashion show on October 24th. Birmingham, AL (PRWEB) October 4, 2004 -- In celebration of eighty years of service to the greater Birmingham community, the Omicron Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is planning a series of public events throughout the month of October, culminating in the Sepia Fashion Revue at the BJCC Concert Hall on October 24, the chapters anniversary date. In addition to the fashion show, the chapter will sponsor a reception and a panel discussion on the importance of the female vote in the upcoming election.
As the oldest graduate chapter not only in Birmingham but in the Southeastern region, we are honored to have served the community for eighty years and are looking forward to continuing our programs for years to come," stated Judith T. Jones, President of Omicron Omega. Over the years, the chapter has contributed to the community by raising tens of thousands of dollars for organizations such as the Sickle Cell Foundation of Alabama, adopting local public schools, coordinating an annual career forum for high school students and annually giving at least $10,000 in college scholarships."
The kick-off event, a panel discussion entitled SWING: Empowering Alabamas Swing Voter to Raise her Voice for President," will be held at the JCCEO Headquarters (300 E Avenue West) on Thursday, October 7th, from 6:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M. Confirmed guests include Ebony Arrington, Cox radio personality and owner of Ebony Arrington Dance Studios; Jefferson County Commissioners Bettye Fine Collins and Shelia Smoot; Jefferson County Clerk Anne-Marie Adams; and Suzanne Durham, Executive Director of Central Alabama YWCA. Marie Jones, publisher of The Sword magazine and host of The Sword Talk Radio on WAGG (610 AM), will be the moderator for the discussion. The event is free and open to the public.
The following Sunday, October 10, the members of the sorority will worship together at Sixth Avenue Baptist Church, where the chapter intends to announce its upcoming contribution to the Jon Roderick Porter Music Scholarship Fund. The reception will be in the churchs fellowship hall immediately following 11:00 A.M. service. Harpist Frederica Coleman will be the featured musician. The reception is free and open to the public.
Finally, on October 24, its eightieth birthday, the chapter will hold its Annual Fall Fundraiser, The Sepia Fashion Revue: A Fashion Silhouette at the BJCC Concert Hall at 5:00 P.M. The shows producer is Carlton Hamilton of Chicago and features fashions from Donna Karen, Versace and Calvin Klein, among others. Tickets for the event are $15.00 and are available by calling the sorority at 781-8181. Proceeds from the show will go back into the community through the chapters programs, such as the IVY Reading AKAdemy at Councill Elementary. Omicron Omega is one of nine graduate chapters selected in the country to participate in this program, which targets students who are at-risk for reading deficiencies.
Omicron Omega, a graduate chapter, currently has approximately 200 active members in the greater Birmingham area.
