President Bush Misleads the Public about Stem Cell Research

Download this press release as an Adobe PDF document.

(PRWEB) October 12, 2004 -- In the second Presidential debate, President George W. Bush said, Embryonic stem-cell research requires the destruction of life to create a stem cell. I'm the first president ever to allow funding—federal funding—for embryonic stem-cell research. I did to because I too hope that we'll discover cures from the stem cells and from the research derived."

With 75% of the public in support of embryonic stem cell research, what the President did not say is that the Bush Administration has lobbied aggressively at the United Nations to ban worldwide one of the two forms of embryonic stem cell research since August 2001. In fact, the United States has co-sponsored a joint resolution with a number of Roman Catholic nations to do just that.

Even leaving aside the misguided rationale for this position, President Bushs resolution to the United Nations is unlawful because it does not have the approval of Congress. In fact, 58 Senators have written to President Bush for him to modify his stem cell policy. Given that he answered the last question in the second Presidential debate by saying he hasnt made one mistake in policy during his term, it seems clear that this President will continue to sacrifice medical and scientific advancements for extreme religious views.

For a more detailed look at stem cell research from a scientific, popular, legal, religious, and political point of view, see the full article here.
