Annapolis, MD (PRWEB) October 13, 2004 -- Raw Dog Screaming Press and Barnes & Noble are proud to present The Horror of Writing: The Thrill of Success and Failure—A Workshop on Horror Fiction and the Writing Life. This free event takes place Thursday, October 14th, and the Annapolis Barnes & Noble, located in the Annapolis Harbor Center, 2512 Solomons Island Rd. 410-573-1115.
Every reader wonders, at some point, what their favorite authors are like and how they live. What does it mean to be an author—and what does it mean to throw a genre like horror into the mix? What is it about dark subject matter that thrills us time and time again? The Horror of Writing is an in-store event that will allow fans "behind the curtain" like no other. Through anecdotes, audience Q & A, and examples from their own works, the carefully selected participants will reveal not only what it means to be an author, but what exactly "horror" is and isn't.
Participants in this event will shed light on all aspects of the writing life. From how books are written to how they are published, from fans to family life, from inspiration to failure, the authors and editors involved will answer all the questions on the audience's mind. The Horror of Writing will be of interest to longtime fans of the genre, aspiring writers, or anyone interested in Halloween happenings.
Participants:
Douglas Winter (Oakton, VA) is not only an accomplished author and editor, but is also the biographer of both Stephen King and Clive Barker. His criticism, reviews and interviews have appeared in countless magazines and newspapers. He will discuss the trials famous authors had to overcome on their path to success, and how they managed to stay on top.
Brian Keene (Shrewsbury, PA) is the Bram Stoker Award-winning author of The Rising. He is one of the organizers behind the wildly successful annual Horrorfind convention in Baltimore, and is well-known for his strong readings, as evidenced by his audio book Talking Smack. He can illustrate point-by-point what goes into orchestrating public events, how to have a successful reading, and what is involved in cultivating a public image.
John Edward Lawson (Landover Hills, MD) is cofounder of Raw Dog Screaming Press. He participated in the publishing panel at this year's World Horror Convention and has been the guest of online publishing chats. He offers a behind-the-scenes look at the nuts and bolts of publishing houses and can advise writers on approaching publishers.
Ronald Damien Malfi (Annapolis, MD) is an author of literary fiction, thrillers, and horror, as well as a writer of screenplays. He will discuss molding believable characters, creating and maintaining tension, and the finer points of pacing plot.
Matthew Warner (Falls Church, VA) is a member of the board of the Mid Atlantic Horror Professionals, and recently delivered a lecture on horror literature at the Associated School Librarians of Fairfax County annual conference. He will discuss horror as a genre: what it is, what it tries to accomplish, and archetypal examples of great horror stories.
Raw Dog Screaming Press was founded August, 2003, and will release eleven titles by the end of 2004 in trade paperback, hardcover, and special editions. RDSP is dedicated to putting into print the highest quality literature from the fringe. If it is dark, deviant, off-kilter and thought provoking RDSP will sniff it out.
