Dancer Eleo Pomare, AmfAR, and The Balm in Gilead to Receive Awards for Fight Against HIV/AIDS

(PRWEB) October 21, 2004 -- Mr. Eleo Pomare, AmfAR, and The Balm in Gilead will be honored at The Law and Policy Group, Inc.'s champagne awards reception this year.

The theme is "A Call to Action: Fighting HIV/AIDS in the New Millennium." The three honorees have contributed greatly to the fight against HIV/AIDS. Famed dancer and choreographer Eleo Pomare is this year's James Balwin Award honoree. AmfAR will receive the Stalwart Award. The Balm in Gilead, a church-based organization, will receive the Young Lion Award. This year's awards recognize the fight against HIV/AIDS. The awards reception will take place on Saturday, November 13th, 6:30pm, at Rush Arts Gallery located at 526 West 26th Street in New York City.

Mr. Eleo Pomare, the James Baldwin award recipient, is an internationally recognized dancer, choreographer, and teacher who creates socio-political works of dance including a major dance performance piece about HIV/AIDS which has increased dialogue and awareness among the dance community and its audience. Eleo Pomare is an elder statesman of dance who bridges the gap left by the generation of dancers and teachers lost to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Mr. Pomare is founder of the Eleo Pomare Dance Company and Dancemobile. He is a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship as well as awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and other institutions.

The Young Lion Award recipient, The Balm in Gilead, is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization with an international mission to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS throughout the African Diaspora by building the capacity of faith communities to provide services, HIV/AIDS education, and to build support networks for all people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.

The Stalwart Award recipient, the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), is the nation's leading non-profit organization dedicated to the support of AIDS research, AIDS prevention, treatment education, and the advocacy of sound AIDS-related public policy.
