VeriLAN, Inc., an Oregon-based wireless solutions provider, today announced free Wi-Fi service to anyone in Portland. The new wireless (802.11b) service is limited to 56Kbps speeds, but its available to anyone over a broad service area broadcast from the towers in the west hills of Portland or the downtown Vivato antenna for extended mobility.

Portland, OR (PRWEB) October 25, 2004 -- This free offering will allow anyone to use our Vivato phased array wireless switch in downtown Portland", explained Steven Schroedl, President of VeriLAN Inc. The antenna, mounted on the B&O Building near the Willamette River, has exceptional range. Laptops and PDAs, equipped with ordinary WiFi cards will work up to 2.5 miles away from our antenna located across from Waterfront Park – no external antennas or amplifiers are necessary," said Mr. Schroedl. VeriLAN, also installed a WiFi transmitter high atop the KGW television mast. People will need an external antenna to connect to the television tower," explained Schroedl.

Morgan Sackett, a network engineer for VeriLAN Inc., believes the free service will be handy for low data-rate uses, 56k is fast enough for most services like email, instant messaging, or simple web surfing. If clients wish to upgrade to a faster speed we can make that change within minutes of the request."

VeriLAN hopes the benefits of free wireless service will convince many people to upgrade to faster wireless service starting at $35/month. A range of speeds and services are available.

The free service comes with some provisions: Theres a 5GB per month transfer limit with no web-hosting or spam filtering. You will need to signup with a valid email address and the free service requires a self-install. Any phone support costs extra. Two hardware kits are available for connection with the tv tower, one under 6 miles and one for users over 6 miles.

In other news, VeriLAN recently added VoIP Telephony so clients can replace their home or business phone lines for significant savings and benefits. Business owners can add phone lines in remote cities, bridge remote employees and allow 4 digit dialing to any employee located virtually anywhere. Residential service offers a flat rate long distance package. Special numbers from overseas locations like Berlin, Vienna, London are also available.
