DENVER, CO (PRWEB) October 29, 2004 -- MycoLogics, Inc., an innovative biotechnology company specializing in the development of novel antifungal drugs and therapeutic and prophylactic vaccines, today announced the receipt of patent 6,730,495 and 6,743,598, awarded by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, for the discovery of compositions and methods related to both the identification of antimicrobial compounds and for the identification of fungal glucose utilization inhibitors and antifungal agents.
Infections by fungal or bacterial species account for significant morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Although significant resources have been dedicated to identifying compounds having antimicrobial properties, microbial infections continue to present a significant human health risk in both developed and underdeveloped countries. Patent 6,730,495 allows for an assay of ketol-isomerase activity to be utilized for screening potential drug compounds that possess antimicrobial activity via the inhibition of this enzymes activity.
During the last three decades there has been a dramatic increase in the frequency of fungal infections, especially disseminated systemic mycoses in immunocompromised patients. Patent 6,743,598 finds use in deriving new classes of antifungal drug compounds that have the ability to inhibit fungal glucose utilization by affecting the production of key metabolic intermediates.
These patents are key in our proprietary antifungal drug discovery program. They provide the unique opportunity for these assays to be used to screen compound libraries for inhibitors of ketol-isomerase and glycolytic enzyme activities," said Dr. Claude P. Selitrennikoff, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of MycoLogics, Inc.
