Naperville, IL (PRWEB) October 29, 2004 -- Wizdom Systems, Inc., a leading consulting and engineering services company has been awarded a Phase II Small Business Innovative Research grant from the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) to research process and control methods that will significantly increase the yield in the production of Focal Plane Arrays (FPA), devices crucial to the successful deployment of the nations missile defense system. The project is managed by the Air Force Research Laboratory; Space Vehicles Directorate. Wizdom is teamed with Rockwell Science Center RSC of Thousand Oaks, California, which is the end producer of the FPAs. This grant marks Wizdoms tenth SBIR awarded by the Federal Government.

The major objective of Wizdoms SBIR grant is to research ways to increase the yield, improve production technology, and reduce the cost for focal plane arrays. FPAs represent an important aspect of detecting and identifying enemy threats at increased range with greater accuracy.

Under this SBIR, Wizdom is researching improved Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) Surface Temperature Control through Metrology Alternatives and improved Material Features Correlation using advances in predictive theoretical models. The result will be an impact/opportunity assessment of new methods, materials and particular ways of controlling the process with new algorithms and instrumentation.

"Scientific research is vital to ensuring America's economic, energy and national security," said U.S. Representative Judy Biggert (R-IL), Chairman of the Energy Subcommittee of the House Science Committee. "Research often hinges on federal grants such as SBIRs to provide influential companies like Wizdom Systems with the added monetary tools they need to go forward with crucial projects."

As has been our history, Wizdom expects to carry forward these SBIRs to Phase II implementation," said Dennis E. Wisnosky, Wizdom founder and President. The result for RSC will be significant improvement in their ability to increase production quantity. The result for MDA will be lower cost per unit. And, the result for Wizdom will be entry in to a new market segment with advanced controls technology.
