Write of Passage: A Journey into Boyle Heights is a class whose purpose is to train participants, especially the youth of Boyle Heights, to develop their communication skills through writing and acting.

What rites of passage do young people confront in todays world? The class will focus on producing one complete body of work, (play, short story, screenplay, essay, poem etc.), which will explore broadly this notion of rites of passage". Participants will also receive acting training, focusing on the work created in the classroom. The class will culminate with a public performance the weekend of January 21st 2005. Thus the class will in itself become a rite of passage as participants will go from creating an original work, to expressing it with their own voice before an invited audience.
The class will be taught by Emmanuel Deleage, Director of Casa 0101 Theater. A graduate of UCLA in World Arts and Cultures, Mr. Deleage has written, directed and acted in performances throughout Los Angeles. His latest play Nat Turner: Insurgent was performed at the 4305 Village Theater in Leimert Park in the summer to exceptional reviews. Mr. Deleage has produced and directed plays by Josefina Lopez, including Lola Goes to Roma, Food for the Dead and Real Women Have Curves at Casa 0101. Emmanuel has also acted under renowned theater directors Peter Sellars, and with Armand Gatti in France.
