Gorgeously and richly bizarre ... an enchanting experience from first to last word, brimming with charm, wit, creeping dread, and sense of wonder." (Montreal Gazette)

A triumph of tone and context." (Globe and Mail)

The best English novel of the year." (The Guardian)

"A classic of our times ... The work of a great English stylist in full maturity; a masterpiece." (The Observer)

In a statement from Germany, where she is promoting her book, Susanna Clarke stated, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell took me ten years to write and on many occasions I almost gave up thinking I couldnt finish it.
