Cincinnati, OH (PRWEB) November 17, 2004 -- The 2004 National Tour of the Beautiful Black Child Showcase (BBCS) will be held in Birmingham, Alabama on Saturday, November 20, 2004. The Beautiful Black Child Showcase is a scholarship awards program designed to build self-esteem by celebrating the kaleidoscope of complexions, hair styles, personalities and academic accomplishments of African-American girls.

The local competition will be held at Carver High School, located at 3900 24th Street North, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Girls 6 months – 12 years old are eligible to enter. The Birmingham Showcase will be presented in two sessions. Girls between the ages of 6 months to 8 years of age will be featured in the morning session (8AM – 12 Noon) and the afternoon session (12 Noon – 3PM) is for girls ages 9 - 12 years old.

The BBCS is presented by Cybervillage, USA, a non-profit (501c3) organization dedicated to bringing computer access and technology training to disadvantaged communities across the country. The J. Lockhart Performing Arts Institution, a non-profit organization dedicated to community service, is the local host of the Birmingham Showcase.

Contestants will be judged in the categories of Best Mathematician, Best Public Speaker, Black History Scholar, Best Reader, Best Technology Skills, Most Photogenic, Best Dressed, Prettiest Hair Style, and Prettiest Smile.

Top winners of the local competition will receive a $1,000 savings bond, a trophy and prizes. However, everyone who participates is considered a winner and will get a trophy, gift basket, and ribbon. Winners of the local title will compete for the national title within their age group. The national showcase will be held in Atlanta, Georgia in February of 2005. Winners of the national showcase will receive a $5,000 prize and a chance to appear in a national television or magazine ad.

With the focus on academics for the older girls, participants are discouraged from wearing sequined attire, make-up, wigs or hair pieces.
