The service, called J9Music (www.j9music.com.au), allows unsigned artists in any genre the ability to sell CDs, ‘downloadable CDs or individual track downloads. There are no setup costs, or ongoing fees – its completely free. The artist keeps 70% of the purchase price, and J9Music handles all ripping and shipping.
We decided to control the ripping process ourselves, so that we could be assured of the sound quality of the tracks on the site. Neen Monty, founder of the site, explains. It means artists need to send us a copy of their CD and it takes a little more time to get online, but it also guarantees to customers that they are getting a quality product, in the most widely accepted format, mp3.
As much as possible, J9Music has aimed to keep the control with the musician. The agreement artists sign with J9Music is completely non-exclusive and non-restrictive, and therefore acts can use the site in addition to their other online or offline promotional efforts. Artists set their own prices, so its quite feasible that an act can make more money from selling one track download on J9Music, than they can by selling a whole album under a traditional record contract.
The service also benefits major labels, however. We dont think the industry at large will be upset by our little service, in fact we are actively promoting the site to the major labels as a place to find new talent. All an A&R person needs to do is hit the J9Music charts and there they can find artists with a ready made following, who are already making sales. Why wouldnt they look for new talent here?" Neen adds.
Most of all the service benefits music lovers who have had enough of manufactured music and manufactured music idols. The site is easy to use and offers several ways of searching for music: by genre, by artist name, song title or a ‘sounds like artist search.
