Canadian Company Provides System To Assure Safety of Drugs Imported to U.S.
Toronto, Ontario (PRWEB) November 4, 2004 -– GlobalCanadaRx, an Ontario-based company specializing in international pharmacy procurement systems, today announced the launch of www.globalcanadarx.com. The new international pharmacy web site makes their unique services available to U.S. residents and states seeking to obtain affordable prescription drugs from Canada. The announcement comes on the heels of Illinois decision to enable their residents to begin purchasing prescription drugs from pharmacies in Canada, Ireland and the U.K.
The site was designed for HMOs, PBMs (Pharmacy Benefits Managers) and other health benefits managers to insure the safety of drugs dispensed to U.S. residents and institutions from international pharmacies. Their web-based system will allow a central processing center to process patients orders, and direct those orders for fulfillment to U.S. and international pharmacies. The system takes each order and compares prices from several different countries and determines which country is offering the lowest price. In some cases, orders are fulfilled by multiple pharmacies in separate countries to maximize savings.
Before any prescription is filled, as a unique safety feature, the GlobalCanadaRx computer system runs a drug utilization review (DUR), to ensure the safety of all orders to be filled. Using this system, GlobalCanadaRx pharmacists are able to run a thorough DUR, including drug-to-drug interaction and duplicate therapy checks. Their web-based interface provides foreign physicians with the ability to review a patients profile, original prescription, and attending physicians contact information to assure the accuracy of the order. All orders are then marked with system-generated bar codes for accurate processing to further insure against possible dispensing errors.
We feel our system provides a superior link in the chain to providing U.S. residents with safe and affordable prescription drugs," said GlobalCanadaRx spokesman Phillip Guidicci, who cited a recent study by the Illinois Department of Management Services that estimates Illinois residents could save a combined $55 million in 2005 by purchasing their prescription drugs from state-approved Canadian and international sources.
Other states seem poised to follow in Illinois footsteps. Vermont plans to sue the U.S. Food and Drug Administration over the agency's decision to reject the state's petition to import less-expensive Canadian drugs, and Iowa has expressed interest in joining their cause. Our system effectively removes any safety concerns the FDA may have had," added Guidicci. The time has come for the pharmaceutical industry and the government to start putting the patients before the profits".
