Fred Couples has been proclaimed the "King of Skins" after winning his record fifth Skins Game over the Thanksgiving weekend.

La Quinta, CA (PRWEB) December 3, 2004 -- Fred Couples has been proclaimed the "King of Skins" after winning his record fifth Skins Game over the Thanksgiving weekend.

This time though, it took a few extra holes to accomplish. Tiger Woods battled with Couples over four playoff holes to claim the final three skins worth $340,000, for a total of $640,000.

"I'm just happy I took the 'king of skins' extra holes," Woods said. "I made him work for it."

Couples won all his money Sunday on the back nine at the cold and blustery Trilogy Golf Club, starting with a birdie putt worth $300,000 and eight skins on the first hole. After Woods' tee shot went into the water on the last playoff hole, the par-3, 204-yard 17th, Couples was finally crowned King.

Couples, 45, has won a record $3,515,000 and 77 skins in 11 appearances in this 'Silly Season' tournament.

"It's a sweet day for me," Couples, the 1992 Masters champion, said.

Woods finished second with five skins and $310,000, more money than he had won in four previous Skins Games combined.

After making $225,000 in her Skins Game debut in 2003, Annika Sorenstam was shut out this year. She and Australian Adam Scott were eliminated on the first playoff hole. Skins rookie Scott pocketed $50,000 from two skins on Saturday, when the first nine holes were played.

On the 17th tee for the fourth playoff hole, Woods pushed his shot into the lake on the left side of the fairway. Couples played it safe from the tee knowing he just needed to hit the green and two-putt for par and the win.

Long live the King.
"DivotMat congratulates Freddy on his Skins victory," Scott Gold, CEO of DivotMat said. "He is an amazing ballstriker and truly enjoys the game and the competition."

"DivotMat is a great sponsor and a great product," Couples said, "I think it would make a terrific holiday gift."

DivotMat can be ordered online for $59.95 at www.divotmat.com or by calling 888-943-4868.
