Surgical Procedures Rapidly Grow Across the Globe

Cardiovascular procedures have grown at an astonishing rate in the US due to the rising incidence of obesity and heart disease.

(PRWEB) December 24, 2004 -- The need for surgical intervention will rise dramatically over the next few years due to aging populations and rising life spans in the major industrialized nations. The need for cardiovascular, dental, endoscopic, general, gynecological, neurosurgical, ophthalmic, orthopedic, and urological surgical procedures has dramatically grown. Cardiovascular procedures have grown at an astonishing rate in the U.S due to the rising incidence of obesity and heart disease. According to a report by Millennium Research Group (MRG), nearly 13.5 million cardiovascular procedures were performed in 2003, a number that will rise to nearly 18.9 million procedures in 2008.

Orthopedic procedures are growing rapidly in the four largest economies of the European Union—France, Germany, Italy, and the UK. The aging population of these countries, combined with a more active lifestyle for seniors has rapidly grown orthopedic procedures. In 2003, nearly 1.3 million orthopedic reconstruction, spine, and bone graft procedures were performed in these countries, and the volume of procedures will expand at a rapid 6.1% compound annual growth rate.

Though in previous years the long approval times required in Japan and poor reimbursement limited laparoscopic procedures, these limiters are waning as Japanese physicians rapidly adopt minimally invasive surgery. As a result of this trend, Laparoscopic procedures in Japan will grow from just under 250,000 in 2003 to 370,000 procedures in 2008.

MRG's Global Surgical Procedure Volumes 2004 series covers procedures and products produced by hundreds of major health care companies including 3M (MMM), Baxter (BAX), Becton Dickinson (BDX), Boston Scientific (BSX), GE Medical (GE), Guidant (GDT), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Medtronic (MDT), Smith & Nephew (SNN), St. Jude Medical (STJ). The series includes coverage of the US, Europe, and Japan.

A leading source of competitive intelligence, MRG is now the largest provider of medical device market research in the world. Located in Toronto, Canada, MRG covers global markets and has pioneered reporting of numerous emerging products.
