With major international policy-making bodies such as the United Nations, Tony Blair's Commission for Africa and the World Trade Organization making unprecedented efforts to enhance the living conditions of millions of people (Source: The Economist print edition), Destin, motivational speaker and author of The Inner Circle of Greatness" program, asks, is there a better way?
During the 1990s, a number of international conferences and summits were held which focused on enhancing the living conditions of the worlds poor. As a result of these efforts, a set of poverty relief goals was born, known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Further, in 2004 the Copenhagen Consensus prioritized 17 key focus areas aimed at confronting ten major global challenges. Amongst these are efforts to reduce poverty and to increase the overall living conditions of humanity.
With so much emphasis on creating better living standards for the worlds poor, there may be much value in also heeding the words of almost forgotten 1910 author Wallace D. Wattles, who had a radical approach to solving this problem. In his book, The Science of Getting Rich," Mr. Wattles explained, What tends to do away with poverty is… getting pictures of wealth into the minds of the poor… increasing the number of poor people who purpose with faith to get rich. The poor do not need charity; they need inspiration. Charity only sends them a loaf of bread to keep them alive in their wretchedness, or gives them an entertainment to make them forget for an hour or two; but inspiration will cause them to rise out of their misery…
This interesting thought puts a radical twist on poverty relief efforts. Destin believes that perhaps we need to accompany poverty relief with basic education in positive thinking. Further entrepreneurial mentorship programs should also be considered for the poor. This will allow the poor to have access to role models who can instill wealth and success philosophies in their lives.
To assist with the basic problem of startup capital, perhaps aid funds could be directed towards business development initiatives. This will encourage poor people to hope for a better future. They will feel inspired and empowered to enhance their lives and seek a better living standard. The world has a solution to poverty; with the uncommon advances in science, medicine and technology that we have experienced over the last 100 years, we now have the means to solve this global crisis. All we need now is the desire and wisdom, to make it happen.
