(PRWEB) December 27, 2004 -- 3rd Wave, the creators and operators of one of the world's largest free hotspot networks in the world, has addded another popular location to their growing list of free hotspots. Lenox mall, one of Georgia's largest and most popular malls, is now a 3rd Wave Free HotSpot.
3rd Wave started building their free hotspot network 16 months ago after the Starbucks across the street from their office started charging for wi-fi. "Why anyone would want to pay for wi-fi after paying $6 for a 50 cent cup of coffee is beyond my comprehension," said Mike Landman, president of 3rd Wave.
After looking for other free hotspots around town, Landman realized that Atlanta ranked last in a list of cities with free wi-fi, according to jiwire.com. So 3rd Wave engaged in an organically-funded crusade to put Atlanta on the free wi-fi map. Twelve months later, a search of jiwire.com's listing of free hotspots showed Atlanta as having more free hotspots than any other major city (over 1 million people) in the entire world.
Many cities, Atlanta included, have recently announced initiatives to make their cities more wireless. "Atlanta has spend millions studying it over the past several years," said Landman, "to date, they have only unwired City Hall and it's a fee-based service."
Rich Tanksley, business development manager for 3rd Wave thinks that fee-based wi-fi will die a accelerating death as free wi-fi becomes more prevelant. "Why would you pay for wi-fi when there are so many cool places that want to make you happy by providing you with free wi-fi," he said.
3rd Wave now has 55 free hotspots around Atlanta and that number grows by several a month. They have more than 4000 users on the network and see about 4000 user logins per month. The number of registered is currently growing by about 500 a month.
