Clarence Walton, PhD., "The Father of Business Ethics" Passes Away

The American College reported today the passing of Clarence C. Walton, PhD., Professor Emeritus on April 13, at his home in Maryland following a long illness, at the age of 88. Walton, regarded by many as the Father of Business Ethics", was the first holder of the Charles Lamont Post Chair in Ethics and the Professions at The American College – the first endowed chair of its kind in the country devoted exclusively to the study of business ethics. Born in 1915, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Walton was the son of the superintendent of the Syracuse railroad yard for the Lackawana Railroad. With the encouragement and help of his parents, combined with fellowships earned by Walton, the future academic powerhouse became a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Scranton. He later went on to earn a masters degree from Syracuse University and a doctoral degree from Catholic University.

After serving as a counter intelligence officer during World War II, Walton served as the Dean of Duquesnes School of Business Administration and later as the Dean of Columbia Universitys School of General Studies. In 1969, Walton became the first lay administrative head of Catholic University, where he was named President.

Two years after retiring from Catholic University in 1978, Walton joined The American College and became The Colleges first Professor of Ethics. He remained a full-time faculty member through 1985.

Over the course of his career, Walton authored and edited 14 books and numerous scholarly articles. His contributions brought him a wide variety of recognitions including 16 honorary doctorates, the Beta Gamma Sigma Award in 1976 for significant work in business scholarship and the Summer Marcus Award in 1988 from the Academy of Management for his contributions in management and ethical theory.

In 1986, Walton received the Solomon S. Huebner Gold Medal, the highest honor bestowed by The American College. The award is presented annually in recognition of distinguished service to education and professionalism."

During his illustrious career, Walton worked as a consultant on social and political sciences to large corporations. He was responsible for making business ethics an integral part of executive training courses at General Electric, IBM, U.S. Steel, Prudential, Alcoa, USX and other major corporations.
