DENVER, CO (PRWEB) May 3, 2004 -- The 11th Annual Writers Digest International Self-Published Book Awards has announced Colorado author Marilyn Van Derbur and her book Miss America by Day as the 1st Place Winner in its Inspirational category.
One of only nine first-place winners of 1,900 total entries, Miss America by Day won top honors of 242 books entered in the Inspirational category. Winners will be officially announced in the August 2004 issue of Writers Digest. Last year the same award was earned by Healing the Fisher King by Shelly Durrell.

BIO of a Survivor: Marilyn Van Derbur
Marilyn Van Derbur was crowned Miss America while she was a student at the University of Colorado. She graduated with Phi Bet Kappa honors. Growing up, her well-known, highly-respected father continuously sexually assaulted her from age five to 18. When her story landed on the cover of People Magazine, there was a national outpouring of survivors who turned to her for help and support.
Van Derbur has been named the Outstanding Woman Speaker in America" and inducted into the Colorado Womens Hall of Fame. She has hosted 23 network television specials and produced 24 films, two of which won national and international awards. One was shown on prime-time PBS and eight others have been shown in hundreds of classrooms nationwide. She has become one of the most recognized authorities on the topic of sexual abuse, an educator of parents on how to keep their children safe from predators, and a resource to the professional community.
On May 1, 2004, she will address a University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work conference on adoptive parents in the morning and address sexual violation with Civil Air Patrols Cadet Protection Training Program in the afternoon.
On May 6, 2004, The Anti-Defamation League honors Marilyn and her husband Larry with the 2004 ADL Torch of Liberty Award" as they celebrate the tradition of community work, passing the torch to their children Jennifer and Joel.
