What better way to shake up the routine politics of the current election season than to hear from 12 new candidates with fresh ideas for leading the nation? That is the question posed by Showtime's new reality series, "American Candidate." Executive Producers R. J. Cutler, producer of the acclaimed documentary "The War Room," along with Jay Roach and Tom Lassally, are now selecting 12 candidates from hundreds of applicants to compete in a simulated run for the White House this Summer against the backdrop of the national election. The winner will receive $200,000 and a nationally televised address to the nation.
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) May 14, 2004--What better way to shake up the routine politics of the current election season than to hear from 12 new candidates with fresh ideas for leading the nation? That is the question posed by Showtime's new reality series, "American Candidate." Executive Producers R. J. Cutler, producer of the acclaimed documentary "The War Room," along with Jay Roach and Tom Lassally, are now selecting 12 candidates from hundreds of applicants to compete in a simulated run for the White House this Summer against the backdrop of the national election. The winner will receive $200,000 and a nationally televised address to the nation.
Some of the candidates have new approaches to the issues facing the nation. Chris Smith, an Independent from California, wants to rapidly transition the nation to energy independence with cleaner alternatives to fossil fuels.
The nation's thirst for fossil fuels drives our foreign policy and threatens our environment. Clean Energy Independence promotes a cleaner environment for our children and grandchildren and makes us less dependent on foreign oil from places like Iraq and the Middle East," says Smith.
Smith also proposes to move the nation to a Progressive Flat Tax and to address the teacher shortage by doubling the number of qualified teachers with a massive recruiting campaign.
Smith says, When the politicians talk about reducing class sizes, they forget to mention that we do not have enough qualified teachers to lead those classes. We need to invest in fixing education to secure the future success of our nation and should respect our teachers as society's heroes."
The American people are ready to hear from a candidate who is not in the pockets of big money donors and special interests. Progress on important issues is bogged down in the Washington establishment by partisan distractions," says Smith.
Taking a page from the professional politicians, candidates create web pages at the "American Candidate" web site http://www.americancandidate.com/ . On the web site, visitors can express their support for candidates and learn more about the platforms of each campaign. Some candidates use a "campaign blog" to broaden the reach of their message, like Chris Smith's at http://votechrissmith.blogspot.com/ .
"American Candidate" is set to begin following candidates along the campaign trail in June, beginning in places like Keene, New Hampshire. Prior to that, candidates and supporters can gather at national "Meetups" promoted by http://americancandidate.meetup.com/ . Chris Smith is scheduled to appear at the Meetup in Santa Monica, CA on Monday, May 17, at 7:00 P.M. "American Candidate" can be seen on Showtime on Sundays at 9:00 P.M. beginning in August.
