Ms. Steinem has been a feminist and political activist at least since 1972, when she co-founded Ms. magazine. In the decades since then, she has taught – just by being herself – uncounted thousands, and more likely millions, about what it means to be an independent woman.
More than three decades after co-founding Ms. magazine in 1972, Steinem remains one of America's most influential, eloquent and revered feminists, best-known for her advocacy on behalf of women and her outspoken writings and activism. Undeniably one of the most important voices of the modern feminist movement, Steinems name is synonymous with the advancement of women's social equality in America and throughout the world. Now 70, Steinem continues her mission to help others have the freedom to pursue their dreams.
In 1960, Steinem began working as a writer and journalist in New York City, and gained attention in 1963 with the Esquire article, I was a Playboy Bunny," which recounted her experience as a waitress at Hugh Hefners Playboy Club. By 1968, her writing had become overtly political with her column, The City Politic," for New York magazine.
In 1969, when many women in New York openly began to discuss their experiences, Steinem became an activist and spokesperson for the feminist movement. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, she continued to be a key player, helping a variety of organizations with advocacy and action.
Steinem gained prominence as a spokeswoman for women's rights in articles, lectures, and television appearances. She helped found the National Women's Political Caucus (1971), the Women's Action Alliance (1971), and the Coalition of Labor Union Women (1974). She was also the founding editor (1972) of Ms., a feminist magazine, remaining actively involved until its closing (1987) and becoming a consulting editor upon its revival (1990). Her books include Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions (1983), a biography of Marilyn Monroe (1986), Revolution from Within (1992), and the essay collection Moving beyond Words (1993). Ms. Steinems publications also include Moving Beyond Words: Age, Race, Sex, Power, Money, Muscles: Breaking the Boundaries of Gender (1994).
