The Henri Nouwen Society
The Society was established in 1998, two years after Nouwens death. Inspired by the spirituality of solitude, community and compassion that was embodied in the life and ministry of Henri Nouwen, the Society exists to extend Henri Nouwens spiritual and literary legacy and to provide means for people from a variety of backgrounds to build Christian community.

Life of Henri Nouwen
Internationally renowned author, respected professor and beloved pastor, Henri Nouwen wrote over 40 books on the spiritual life that have comforted and inspired a wide range of individuals: Wall street bankers, politicians and professionals, Peruvian peasants, teachers, religious leaders, ministers and care givers.

Born in Holland in 1932, Nouwens desire to better understand human suffering took him to the United States to study at the Menninger Clinic in the Religion and Psychiatry Program. He went on to teach at the University of Notre Dame, the Pastoral Institute in Amsterdam, and the Divinity Schools of both Yale and Harvard where his classes were among the most popular on campus.

Nouwen lived the last 10 years of his life with people who have developmental disabilities in one of Jean Vaniers LArche communities near Toronto Canada. His works have been translated and published in 22 different languages. The Wounded Healer and The Return of the Prodigal Son are two of over 40 books that he wrote.
