Publicist supremo, Max Clifford questions why we hate success so much in the UK and seem to love to put people down

(PRWEB) June 25, 2004 -- In an exclusive video interview with web site company www.expertsonline.tv, Publicist Max Clifford has described how, from his experience, we seem to hate success in the UK and enjoy seeing people put down all the time. He explains how bad things and bad stories are more appealing to the British public than positive stories.

Says Max, We seem to hate success in this country. The sad fact is that a bad story is far more appealing to the British public than a good story. If I was to put up ten really happy stories that give you a lift; someone has done something wonderful for someone, then ten stories which are about destruction; exposing someone, humiliating or ruining someone, its the second lot that the Editors will go for"

In this candid interview, Max goes on to talk about the devastating impact the media can have on ordinary people. He says There are more organisations now; there is the Press Complaints and people like that who are there to protect members of the public from bad, unfair, unjust and intrusive treatment, but its a theory. In reality, in my view it doesnt happen. There are people who suddenly get caught into the media spotlight; someones had a tragic accident or somethings happened to a member of their family or whatever and you know the press swarm all over them. But theres no one there for them. You see, if youre a star, if youre rich, famous and powerful, youve got tons of protection. You can afford a PR person like myself if youre immensely rich or you can afford Lawyers, but the public have got no one. And all the time theres no Legal Aid for libel, theyve got no one to stand up for them. And even if they eventually win their claim, what goes in as a small apology on page 48 when it was a front page splash, so no one notices it, no one sees it but for most people it's impossible. The media can destroy lives, it does destroy lives and the quality of life for lots of people; ordinary members of the public. So one of the things I feel strongly about is that thats an area that should be looked at and should be changed. There should be Legal Aid for libel for ordinary members of the public because that would give them a chance."
