HISD teens: ‘Will learn for computer

Incoming freshmen at Yates and Jones High Schools will take home a free computer this Friday upon successful completion of a free four-week course devoted to building computer literacy, academic and life skills.

Houston, TX (PRWEB) June 26, 2004 -- The free four-week course, offered by local non-profit organization Moore 4 Yates, comes with the promise of an Internet-ready computer for home use for each student. Students will take home the computer theyve earned at their final class this Friday, June 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Jones High School, 7414 Saint Lo Road and at Jack Yates High School, 3703 Sampson Street.

Over the four-week course, students learned about the inner workings of a computer and are now able to load software, upgrade hardware, identify and correct basic hardware problems, and build a website. Students also benefited from daily use of math software designed and donated by Houston-based tutorial company Classmate, LLC. The course also provided guest speakers like Houston Councilwoman Ada Edwards, and an E-Mentor program where each student was able to correspond via email with a young professional.

Everyones Internet® is providing free home Internet access for all computer course graduates. These HISD students will be able to begin using their recycled computers for high school course work, as well as later in college.

More information, including photos of the students participating in the Moore 4 Yates program, live discussion of class topics, and links to web sites for the students currently enrolled in the program, is available through the organization's website www.Moore4Yates.org.

Moore 4 Yates (M4Y) is a federally licensed 501(c)(3) corporation dedicated to bridging the Digital Divide. M4Y has delivered nearly 100 Internet ready computers for home use to disadvantaged students at historically black high schools in Houston since its founding in October 2003. Currently, nearly 60 incoming freshmen are enrolled in the four-week summer course that teaches computer literacy and life skills involving a computer. Plans are currently under development to expand the program for more students enrolled in the Houston Independent School District as well as other major urban areas.
