A recent study conducted by Professor Judith Collins of Michigan State University found that as much as 70 percent of identity theft crimes are the result of records compromises at the workplace. Individuals have taken steps over the past two years to curb the threat of identity theft - unfortunately, most businesses have not.

Burlington, MA (HRMarketer/PRWeb) July 5, 2004 -- Over the past two years, individuals have become much more aware of identity theft and the basic steps they need to take to protect themselves and their personal information. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for businesses. "Stop thief! Protecting employee records from identity theft" is the title of an IHRIM webinar to be presented July 29, 2004 at 12:00 – 1:15 p.m. EST.

A recent study conducted by Professor Judith Collins of Michigan State University found that as much as 70 percent of identity theft crimes are the result of records compromises at the workplace. This webinar will provide an overview of the current state of identity theft and the issue of records theft. The majority of the webinar time will focus on specific actions that an individual can take to enhance the protection of this information as well as a recommended "top down" approach for reducing the risk of a records breach.

Stop thief! Protecting employee records from identity theft
If you have a role in protecting employee or customer information, you need to be aware of your responsibilities for protecting your employer and yourself against potential liabilities arising from a records compromise "on your watch." The primary benefits of attending include:

- Gaining an overview of the issue, risks, and potential liabilities,

- Understanding the principle of "appropriate" protections,

- Gaining an awareness of the potential liability that organizations and individual managers could face for failing to "appropriately" protect personal information,

- Learning about specific actions that you can take – with, or without executive approval - to improve the protection of personal information within your work teams and reduce your personal risk, and

Understanding the components of a "comprehensive security program" which is the FTCs (U.S. Federal Trade Commission) benchmark criteria for "appropriate" protection of personal information.

Presenter Nevin Maffett is the chair of IHRIM's Privacy and Security Special Interest Group and is the president of Application Outfitters, a professional services firm specializing in business systems and information security.
