Technology for Pet Owners Can Help Dogs Play it Cool During the Sizzling Summer

This release announces the new WaterDog outdoor drinking fountain which provides a safe, clean, smart water source for thirsty dogs. It puts the device in context with summer pet safety practices.

Victoria, British Columbia (PRWEB) July 14, 2004 -- Each summer, veterinarians treat thousands of pets suffering from heat-related emergencies. The most common ailments, dehydration and heatstroke, can be avoided by supplying pets with a guaranteed source of cool water. Contech Electronics Inc., has developed an automatic outdoor pet fountain designed with both dogs and their owners in mind.

Just in time for the sweltering summer months, WaterDog(tm) delivers an advanced solution to the stagnant or empty water bowl. WaterDog is easily installed on any outdoor spigot and supplies dogs with fresh, clean water on demand.

Summer brings added responsibilities for pet owners who must remember the importance of keeping dogs constantly hydrated with cool, clean water
How does it work? The WaterDog's ultrasonic sensors automatically turn the flow of water on and off based on pet proximity. Maintaining an adequate supply of cool water should be a priority for pet owners during the hot summer months, as pets will often not drink sun-heated water, increasing the risk of dehydration. WaterDog provides the solution by giving instant access to fresh water from which pets can drink until satiated.

"Summer brings added responsibilities for pet owners who must remember the importance of keeping dogs constantly hydrated with cool, clean water," said Erik Djukastein, president of Contech Electronics. "WaterDog is the saving grace for dogs and their owners. It's convenient - no more refilling the water bowl each day; and it's proven to be cleaner and safer for thirsty animals that regularly share a water bowl. In addition, WaterDog can also significantly reduce the risk of contracting intestinal diseases such as Giardia, which can be caused by dogs drinking from stagnant water contaminated by parasites or bacteria."

WATERDOG
The WaterDog is easy to install (no tools needed) anywhere there is a spigot hook-up. It is 14 inches high when assembled and operates up to one year on one set of batteries. An additional hose flow-through allows a garden hose to be hooked to WaterDog. The product retails for approximately $79 at Foster & Smith, Inc. (www.drsfostersmith.com), Future Pet (www.futurepet.com) and PetSmart Direct (www.petsmart.com).

In addition to supplying a constant supply of water, Contech supports the following summertime pet safety tips from the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA):

  • Never leave a pet in the car, even with the windows cracked. The sun can raise the temperatures up to 120 degrees in a matter of minutes.
  • A pet's fur may not be enough protection from the summer sun, especially for light-colored animals. Keep pets out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and don't be afraid to use sunscreen on sensitive spots like the nose and ear tips.
  • Make sure pets have plenty of shade and ventilation from strong rays.
  • Don't exercise pets during the hottest part of the day.
  • Keep an eye out for signs of heat stress, which include heavy panting, salivation, high heart rate, bright red gums, muscle weakness and collapsing. If a pet is overcome with heat, immerse it slowly in cool water to lower body temperature, and then contact a veterinarian immediately.
