"Are You Ever Going to be Thin?" (and other stories) chronicles artist Samantha Anne Mallory's battle with weight, obesity, family, molestation, abuse, love, marriage, sexuality, infidelity, the Catholic church, traumatic cultural events, and death.
A family reunion awakens the voices of Samantha's relatives, dead and alive. The title story interweaves childhood letters from an aunt with a grandmother's dire warnings about obesity, sex, sin, and duty to family and the Catholic Church.
"Time, An Other," the opening story, describes Samantha's first memory; other stories move forward and backward and forward in time.
"Psychedelic Bingo" moves forward to 2035; "Time, Suspended," the last story (set in 1990), reveals a family secret.
Semple Siegel teaches creative writing and literature at York College of Pennsylvania.
Her fiction and non-fiction, including scholarly articles, have been published in various national and regional journals, magazines, and anthologies. From 1993-1996, she edited Onion River Review, a literary journal.
She earned her M.F.A. (1994) in fiction from Goddard College (Plainfield, Vermont). Semple Siegel has lived in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Belgium. She and her husband Gerald Siegel returned to Macedonia for the 2004-2005 academic year.
