Those kooky co-authors are at it again, this time going after their fans with the novels artwork
San Diego, Calif. (PRWEB) July 28, 2004 -- Brian Snelson (author) and Rodney Sellars (illustrator) of science fiction novel Shaturanga: The Story of Onus," stirred up quite a buzz around the art gallery at Comic-con International this year. The independently published book has been steadily growing in popularity among parents and teens since its release in 2003.
Road trip, anyone? After loading up the car in Long Beach with original illustrations from the novel, a digital camera, and five-hundred shiny new business cards, the two sci-fi pioneers headed down to San Diego, bound for glory. Their destination: Comic-con International, the largest comic book and science fiction convention in the west.
"They have an art gallery there," Snelson said. "And Shaturanga has a lot of art in it. We figure wed set up right next to the big boys and show them what weve got."
Rodney Sellars did over twenty pen and ink illustrations for the novel. Everything from colorful characters and jet cars to domed cities and surgical robots were hung in their gallery space. They even brought out their big gun: a monstrous light-box diorama of the actual book cover.
"We almost didnt get in," Rodney said, nodding his head. We arrived late, had to talk our way past the guards, and then we ran into a bunch of rowdy storm-troopers along the way to the gallery and got taken hostage—just long enough for a photo-op."
Comic-con really packs them in for the four days that its in town, with over seventy thousand rollicking sci-fi fans in attendance. And theres always room for another genre nut, or nuts as it were. Sellars and Snelson are ready to hang with the best of them, to promote their new novel, and to listen for what the fans are into these days.
Everyones looking for the maverick," Snelson observed. We definitely fit that bill. Shaturanga thinks totally outside the box, and that sets us apart. We can afford to explore new territory, we dont have a contract."
Shaturanga" is set far in the future after the earth has succumbed to a new ice age. A kindly old king tells the story of how he was born, or almost wasnt. In the story the oceans are gone, wiped out by an ancient cataclysm of unknown origin, leaving mankind to start over from scratch. New and unusual civilizations have risen as Assha, a pregnant 17-year-old slave girl, sets out against insurmountable odds to bring her unborn child to the throne of a mysterious domed-city empire known as Shaturanga.
In this intriguing literary tale that promotes family values, Snelson satisfies the longings within us all such as the desire for freedom of choice, while confirming certain inherent values such as the value of life.
