Australia Travel in Winter- Darwin and Kakadu National Park

Summer vacation fun and adventure in Australia. See Darwnin and Kakadu National Park

(PRWEB) July 3, 2004 -- Take the family and head to the Northern Territory of Australia for your summer vacation. It is winter travel in Australia and the best time to visit this tropical area not far from the equator. After you have seen Sydney and the Great Barrier Reef, this lesser known part of Australia will be an adventure.

You will start in Darwin, the gateway to Australia's "Top End". Darwin is a lovely small city. Just outside of town you may want to visit the Territory Wildlife Park where you can see the native animals in their natural environment.

After a night in Darwin, most people plan a 3-day trip into Kakadu National Park. The best way to do this trip is by a guided 4-wheel drive small group tour. If there are 4 or more of you, it will likely be private.

Some highlights in Kakadu Park will be a picnic lunch on the banks of the South Alligator River. During lunch, an Aboriginal man may demonstrate the art of tossing the boomerang. You will see ancient Aboriginal rock art and cruise on the East Alligator River. Another cruise will be at Yellow Waters to see bird life. You will also have an excellent chance of seeing a large alligator or two. The Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Center will help you to understand the beliefs and customs of the Aboriginal people.

This is "soft adventure" and is suitable for any age or level of physical fitness. It is possible to do a camping safari. But many people will opt to stay in the Crocodile Hotel and tour with their guide from the hotel. Though it sounds quite hokey, the hotel is shaped like a crocodile. However, inside you will find a lovely and modern hotel right in the middle of a fascinating wilderness area.

Kakadu National Park is on the list of World Heritage areas. For adults and kids alike, it is a memorable interlude in a larger trip to the great continent of Australia.
