Healthy Mouth Healthy Body
Dr. Zeines explains.... "During my thirty years as a nutritionally-oriented practicing Dentist, treating thousands of patients, I've observed that even with adequate diets and diligent hygiene, gum and periodontal problems persisted.
Some years back, as result of my research, I developed and marketed a natural herbal mouth-rinse that effectively relieved gum inflammation. That product called Natural Dentist Herbal Mouth and Gum Therapy is endorsed by Dental schools nationwide and sold throughout the country helping millions of people improve their gums and oral health.
But the systemic problems of BONE LOSS in my patients and thousands of other dental patients was still present. Medically called "Osteoporosis" this disorder involves all our bones as well as the foundation of our teeth and jaws. Weak, porous bones affects a majority of woman over the age of thirty and one-out-of-six men in this country. It's a major health issue for all of us and happens with such frequency because our so-called "balanced diets" no longer contain quality nutrients and minerals. You see, the kinds of foods and types of diet we now have are severely depleted of wholesome, pure, natural, balanced nutrients. As a result we suffer from osteoporosis and periodontal diseases at epidemic proportions.
Periodontal problems impact more than just your teeth. An associate Professor of Dentistry at Temple University has gathered data showing that over 36 million Americans have some form of destructive periodontal disease. A recent study at the University of Buffalo has conclusively linked heart disease to gum problems because the bacteria that causes gum disease also infects heart arteries leading to heart attacks and failures. A 1998 study at the University of Heidelberg showed that periodontal disease triples the risk of having a stroke. These health risks should be of grave concern to us all!

A Dentist's Guide To Tongue Diagnosis
Victor Zeines DDS, MS, FAGD
Case Study: Treating Bleeding Gums & Halitosis
Kayhan Civelek DDS
A patient referred to our office with a chief complaint of bleeding gums and halitosis. Initial examination included; clinical evaluation of intraoral soft tissue including gums tongue and the buccal mucosa. Hard tissue examination was performed via digital x rays, and initial DNA analysis was done to determine the type of microorganism that was present in the mouth specially in the in sulcus/periodontal pocket. Further more periodontal evaluation with full mouth probing was performed by a periodontist.
The result of initial evaluation revealed generalized active periodontitis with an average of 20-25 % attachment loss.
Fig. 1 - Before. There is a localized attachment loss resulting from a fistula between the 1st and 2nd. implants to the right.
The initial treatment consist of improving home care and scaling, root planing. A four-week post evaluation revealed no change in the clinical signs of active inflammation. Bleeding on Probing (BOP), the color, consistency and the texture of soft tissue did not show any improvement. The result of post scaling DNA did not show major shift in the pathologic microbiota.
New studies that were published in JADA and JAMA explain how nutrition plays a major role improving immune response to infection. Therefore, we decided to improve the patient's overall diet with a new supplement that is called OSTEOPRO. The patient was asked to mix one cup of powder with a glass of water and drink it twice a day.
