Hookahville Announces Lineup for Fall Festival

The funky Meters, Dickey Betts Band, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Bernie Worrell and the Woo Warriors, Rob Wasserman, and Hayseed Dixie Confirmed for 22nd Biannual Event

Columbus, OH (PRWEB) August 10, 2004 -- Hookahville, the Ohio festival institution celebrating its 10th year as a production, has confirmed the lineup for the Fall event September 3-5 at Frontier Ranch Music Center in Kirkersville, Ohio. Hosted by the Columbus, Ohio group, ekoostik hookah, the two-day music and camping event features the talents of veterans of the improvisational music world, as well as some of the top younger talent the scene has to offer.

In their 25-year history, The Meters (now officially known as The funky Meters) have grooved their way around the globe. Considered by many to be the founding fathers of funk, The funky Meters created a unique sound lasting through the sixties and seventies and was reborn in the late eighties. Their trademark sound blends funk, blues, and dance grooves with a deep New Orleans vibe. The funky Meters perform Saturday at 4 p.m. before ekoostik hookah.

As a founding member of the seminal group the Allman Brothers Band, ‘Southern Rock was created combining the twin guitar leads of Dickey Betts and Duane Allman. Following twenty-five years touring with the Allman Brothers, Betts has taken to the road with his own group, the Dickey Betts Band, a fire-y ensemble mixing blues, soul, country, and R&B styling with Betts signature tone and incendiary live performance. Dickey Betts Band returns to Hookahville for the second time and performs Friday at 4:30 p.m. before ekoostik hookah.

Somewhere along the line, when Hank Williams crossed paths with AC/DC, therein was created Hayseed Dixie. With their first record, "A Hillbilly Tribute To AC/DC," the group turned the world on its edge, creating a synthesis of styles with fiddle, mandolin, banjo performing the music of AC/DC in a rockin bluegrass" format. Not content to settle interpreting only British rock in a bluegrass style, Hayseed Dixie delved into the Kiss catalog and released Kiss My Grass - A Hillbilly Tribute To Kiss." They currently tour the world to critical acclaim and perform the festival at 2:30 p.m. Friday.

A highly energized funk machine, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe has been expanding listeners' minds and making them move to animated grooves since 1998. Led by former Lenny Kravitz sax-man Karl Denson, the Tiny Universe brings a dynamic sound that defies categorization. Melding post-modern jazz, funk, hip-hop, and world music influences, KDTU have earned a reputation as kings of the unstoppable all-night show, they perform 2:00 p.m. Saturday.

Since the theme of day for Saturday is ‘funk, there is no better group to start things off than Bernie Worrell and the Woo Warriors. Bernie is one of the grandparents of the genre, having performed on keyboards as a founding member of the infamous Parliament/Funkadelic. The Woo Warriors are a six piece ensemble continuing to carry the funk torch mixing Bernies off-kilter distinctively gravelly voice with tight instrumental changes and arrangements. The group kicks off the Saturday afternoon music at noon.

Precious few musicians demonstrate the scope to be dubbed renaissance men, but Rob Wasserman has more than earned the title. His daunting versatility has made him one of the last two decade's most in-demand bassists -- as demonstrated by stints with Lou Reed, Van Morrison and Elvis Costello. His longtime creative partnership with Grateful Dead members Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir have yielded a trove of fertile sounds. And, last but far from least, the albums issued under his own name have won awards from sources in the jazz, pop and rock fields. Rob Wasserman opens the Hookahville festival Friday afternoon at 1 p.m.

The entire festival weekend will feature the visual design and stage lighting of Chris Kuroda, the lighting director for the Vermont band Phish.

Following each nights set from headliner and festival hosts ekoostik hookah, late night entertainment will be presented for the first time at Hookahville. The historic Frontier Ranch Bluegrass Stage that once heard the high and lonesome sound of the genres greats including Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, Del McCoury, and countless others during the venues bluegrass heyday, will feature the live bluegrass of Detroit-based Brandon Creasmans Bluegrass All Stars and The Stringtown Pickers as they perform into the wee hours.

Tickets for Hookahville are available now for $65 in advance, $75 through Ticketmaster beginning August 26, and $85 at the gate. Saturday only tickets are available at the gate only for $55. Early bird camping is available beginning Thursday at 4 p.m. for an additional $10 fee, with paid festival admission.

Hookahville and has designated camping areas for families and those with children; children 10 and under are admitted free, and the festival is an all ages event. Camping is included in the price of admission, with primitive camping services available, bathrooms, medical staff, water are provided. Vendors are set up offering various cuisines as well as a wide variety of merchandise.

Hookahville will also be registering patrons to vote in the upcoming general election through a partnership with HeadCount, a volunteer-run non-profit with a goal of registering 100,000 voters nationwide at shows featuring improvisational music. Citizens of any state may register to vote at the HeadCount booth at the entrance to the viewing area at Frontier Ranch.
