World's first mobile six-degrees-of-separation friends network goes public

Download this press release as an Adobe PDF document.

A unique UK based friends network uses six-degree's-of-separation via your mobile phone to meet friends, or friends of friends safely when your out and about on the town, utilising SMS text and MMS picture messaging

UK (PRWEB) September 1st, 2004 -- When you mention the term "6 degrees of separation", most people think of Kevin Bacon (if they think of anything at all!) thanks to the playground game of having to link him to other Hollywood stars; but the theory that everyone in the world is separated by only "six degrees" (i.e. six people – someone who knows someone who knows someone etc) was originally proposed by Harvard Social psychologist Stanley Milgram, in 1967.

playtxt is a new mobile service that brings the reality of this mind boggling concept to your social life! When out on the town, simply by texting your location from your mobile phone (sending your postcode is easiest) playtxt will tell you who is nearby who you know – youll get to know how many degrees away from them you are, and who the people are who link you to them. Its a great way to meet new friends you have something in common with – i.e. other friends. The more daring can even contact people in the vicinity with whom you dont have any mutual friends, but who match your preferences.

After signing up via your mobile or online at www.playtxt.net, you simply click on profiles of people who are your friends (or invite your friends to signup by text) and you can then begin exploring the network that starts to emanate around you.

Gone are the days when you will need to wait for that coincidence to popup in conversation. Like everything else in this world playtxt speeds up the process and saves you ever valuable time. Whether you fancy a flirt or just want to meet new people, the playtxt location-based mobile social network complements your social life when your out at your favourite nightspot, rather than forcing you to pre-arrange it while glued to a computer screen.

NOTES
playtxt went live quietly underground" in January of 2004. We had our friends testing it for the first few months while we honed the system – the usual story" said Andrew Scott, the 28 year old serial entrepreneur behind playtxt. Some people have described it as a mobile Friendster " he added, referring to the successful U.S. based social networking website which now has 7 million members …but the reality is, my social life is out and about – not stuck squared-eyed in front of my PC. As far as I know there is nothing else this advanced out there, we were the first to do it mobile...and, dare I say it, its really quite cool !".
