Zaytuna Institute Offers Classes on Islamic History, Language and Culture

Hayward, CA (PRWEB) September 6, 2004 -- The Zaytuna Institute, a non-profit, educational institute committed to reviving time-tested methods of educating and transforming human beings, will be teaching Islamic history in America beginning Sept. 11th 2004. The Zaytuna Institute has been arguably the leading Islamic school in the United States, demystifying Islamic culture for the western world.

Zaytuna Institute's Hamza Yusuf and Zaid Shakir have been seen and read about in BBC, PBS and San Jose Mercury News discussing Islamic culture and the modern world. They have also proposed innovative suggestions for actualizing the goals of peace and prosperity valued by all of the worlds citizens. Zaytuna's fall class schedule keeps consistent to those ideals.

We are happy to have students from numerous cultural, racial, and spiritual backgrounds signing up for this class
"Link to the Past, Bridge to the Future: African Muslims in American History" is one of the many highly anticipated classes, which will be hosted by resident scholar Imam Zaid Shakir. The class will be an examination of the African Muslims in America history and the present influences. Topics will cover the periods of early Islamic expansion in Africa and the evidence of the African Muslim link to pre-Columbian America. It will also explore the era of American slavery as well as Islam's impact on the slave population. The class also examines the revival of Islam in the African-American community in the 20th century culminating with the life and works of Malcolm X.

"We are happy to have students from numerous cultural, racial, and spiritual backgrounds signing up for this class" said Director of Operations, Zachary Twist. "For many Americans, the relationship between Islam and America began with the tragedy of 9/11. But many of us have forgotten how truly unique and enriching Islam's history in America has been and will continue to be. The encounter between American and the Islamic community did not and should not be thought of anything that began or ended on September 11th. Any individuals wishing to learn more about the history of the United States of America will enjoy this class."

Other classes offered by the Zaytuna Institute include "Introduction to Islam". This class will give people curious about the history and culture of Islam a solid base of information to expand on. "Introduction to Islam", as well as Arabic language and grammar classes will be taught by Zaytuna Outreach Director Usama Canon.

  • Twist stated "We are all grateful for having been embraced by so many different kinds of people and we look forward to building more bridges through education. Anyone wishing to attend classes should visit our campus or go to our website at www.zaytuna.org to register".
