SMS-Based Service Answers Questions for Mobile Phone Users

The automatic Nuggets question answering service allows to access Internet content in convenient question & answer form via SMS for ordinary mobile phones.

Bad Bergzabern, Germany/Edinburgh, UK/Cambridge, UK (PRWEB) September 13, 2004 -- Have you ever been on the move and wanted to look up some fact on the Web? Chances are you can be helped now. Linguit GmbH, a language technology firm founded in 2001 tries to push towards realising the vision that information should be accessible via ordinary language. To this end they have announced the release of their new offering for mobile phone users, an automatic question answering service, dubbed "Nuggets" because it mines the Web for valuable nuggets of information. This allows people to access Internet content in convenient question & answer form via SMS, and on ordinary mobile phones.

Like traditional search engines, Nuggets relies on Internet sources to answer questions, but doesn't require WAP, which many believe is cumbersome and expensive; instead, the more popular SMS text messages are used. In the first 7 months of 2004, a total of 15 billion text messages were sent in the UK alone according to the Mobile Data Association (MDA).

Nuggets also makes search easier through its use of leading-edge Question Answering (Q&A) technology. Since the system is automatic, users get answers typically within seconds. Linguit CEO and Cambridge graduate Jochen Leidner (31) describes what people are using Nuggets for: "People are sending messages asking about their famous celebrity's birth date, they want to obtain the name of the capital of Yemen or find out how their favorite football team scored when they are traveling and missed the news broadcast. Nuggets knows whether Kangaroos have bags or not and when Madonna was born, and an English question gets you the answer, anytime and anywhere. Never has finding out a fact been so easy."
Of course Nuggets can make mistakes, just like other search engines, but some context is provided in its answers to allow the user to judge the result.

The Nuggets service is available on all major UK mobile networks. Linguit is a trademark of Linguit GmbH.
