Des Moines, IA (PRWEB) September 17, 2004 -- With the stroke of a pen Governor Vilsack made a strong statement in support of marriage and family last week when he proclaimed September 15 as Marriage Fidelity Day in Iowa. Iowa is the second state to formally recognize the day with a gubernatorial proclamation.

In this day and age when infidelity is all around us, from reality TV to special CNN reports, a Wisconsin woman decided to do something about it -launching a national campaign to declare September 15 as Marriage Fidelity Day. Penny Tupy, professional marriage coach and founder/director of SYMC (Save Your Marriage Central) Global Village Inc., brainstormed the idea for a national day to take a stand for keeping ones vows of forsaking all others.

Infidelity affects more than sixty percent of the marriages in the US with the number of women having affairs increasing drastically. I want to do for affairs what MADD did for drinking and driving," says Tupy. The goal for Marriage Fidelity Day is to create a public shift in attitude where remaining faithful and monogamous becomes cool, and cheating is socially unacceptable. We address that by taking a multi faceted approach. We celebrate those who have remained faithful as well as those who have strayed and returned to the marriage, doing the very hard and very courageous work of recovery. We take the position that an affair is not a love story, its a tragedy. We are working to raise awareness of the risk factors for having an affair and how to avoid them."

Tupy comes to do battle armed with personal experience. She was the wayward spouse in her first marriage and knows first hand the pain and grieving that affects every member of the triangle, as well as their families. Her website and online discussion forum are unique in the plethora of online marriage self help resources in that she refuses to take a judgmental position against the people caught in the web of an affair. Choosing instead to advocate for integrity and respect while insisting that infidelity is not acceptable. An affair is almost always an attempt to solve a problem in ones life," she says. But its an unethical solution in that everyone gets hurt and no one ends up happy. That doesnt make the people who have affairs evil or malicious, it makes them sad and hurt and confused. I know. Ive been there."

Earlier this month Governor Murkowski of Alaska became the first to sign the Marriage Fidelity Day Proclamation. Iowa is the second. The initiative will heat up in 2005 as volunteers at SYMC contact every governor in the US. Also coming up in 2005 are plans for activities and events to celebrate Marriage Fidelity Day around the country.

Tupys dream for Marriage Fidelity Day is that it will give couples tools to avoid becoming a marital statistic. For those marriages where infidelity has already rocked their lives she offers hope and solutions for healing their marriages and keeping their families together. She calls these couples, the ones who have stayed faithful or who have strayed and recovered, the unsung heroes of our time.
