October is SIDS Awareness Month in California. Roughly 2,500 infants each year lose their lives to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) (according to National Institute of Health News 2003). SIDS (also known as crib death") is the sudden, unexplained death of an infant in the first year of life, with most deaths occurring between 2 and 4 months.
(PRWEB) September 29, 2004 -- The 24th Annual SIDS Conference (October 7-8, 2004) in Glendale, CA is where professionals and parents meet. Its an opportunity to remind parents of the safety measures that help to decrease the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (early prenatal care, prenatal smoking cessation and smoke-free environment, breast-feeding, use of firm bedding materials, and positioning the infant on his back when sleeping.)
Since the year 2000, the infant rate for SIDS has been reduced from 6,000 per year to 2,500 (in 2003) with the help of Back to Sleep campaigns. However, although the number of SIDS deaths lessens, the number of survivors (parents and family) has still continued to climb. Over the last 4 years alone, we are looking at roughly 65,000+ survivors.
There will always be a need for compassionate support for grieving families. For until a cure for SIDS is found, parents and families will continue to be confronted by this unpredictable tragedy.
A Journey to Healing, provides the compassion, comfort, and resources necessary to help give loved-ones hope. A mother tells how she came through the tragedy of losing her first child to SIDS. But, its more than just a sharing of a personal testimony, it is created to bring healing to those who have suffered the same loss and better equip those who may have to counsel and comfort a loved one, friend, or neighbor through such a tragedy as SIDS.
