The name says it all, 1-4-3 stands for I Love You because there is 1 letter in I 4 letters in Love and 3 letters in You. 1-4-3 means I Love You.
This code is widely used by teens and college students on beepers, cell phones and on line. The actual origin of 1-4-3 as a symbol for I Love You is much more interesting.
The Minot Ledge Lighthouse off the coast of Scituate actually has 1-4-3 as its flashing signal. The legend is that this sequence was chosen by the keeper to signal to his lover on the beach. This is a very famous lighthouse located on a dangerous ledge a mile out in the ocean and it is has been dubbed The I Love You Light. Many couples have 1-4-3 inscribed on the inside of their wedding bands. During the Blizzard of 78 waves were actually crashing over the top of the 97 Foot Light. This granite structure was completed in 1860 and was considered to be one of the greatest architectural accomplishments of the time.
Waltham native and lifelong resident Bob McGann is the President of the company and has written a poem that explains the legend. The poem is attached to a hangtag on all the Teddy Bears. The 1-4-3® I Love You line includes Teddy Bears and Plush Hearts, representations of the Minot Lighthouse on various gift items including frames, ornaments, windchimes, and many other items, candy, greeting cards, and prints with a painting of Minot Light and the poem. The poem has also been translated into Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, German and Japanese. The company, which was started in 2001, is Headquartered Waltham, Massachusetts.
