Willamette Writers and Barnes and Noble Sponsor Kate Herzog Writing Scholarships

Barnes and Noble and Willamette Writers sponsor the 2005 Kate Herzog Writing Scholarship for high school seniors and college freshman and sophomores.

(PRWEB) January 12, 2005 -- Barnes and Noble and Willamette Writers are again sponsoring the 2005 Kate Herzog Writing Scholarship. These scholarships are intended to introduce students to published authors, agents, editors and film producers, and to provide financial aid to students interested in writing.

Deadline for entry: February 28.

1st place, $500 college scholarship
2nd place, $250 college scholarship
3rd place, $250 college scholarship
4th place, pass to attend Willamette Writers writing conference

Each winner will be allowed to attend the Willamette Writers Conference on August 5-7th, in Portland, and that includes 1 banquet ticket to an awards' banquet, one consult with an agent, editor or film producer, and one banquet ticket for the teacher who wrote the letter of recommendation for the student.

High school seniors and college freshman and sophomores can enter.

To apply, Please forward:
1. Original, unpublished writing sample of less than 1000 words, typed, double-spaced. The sample should be titled, but should not include any information about the author. Writing published in school publications is eligible.
2. A cover letter with contact information that includes the title of the writing sample, and a paragraph that includes information about the student's goals as a writer.
3. Letter of recommendation from an instructor in the current academic year.

Dates to Remember:
Application Deadline February 28th, 2005
Finalists Will Be Announced May 15, 2005
Scholarships Will Be Awarded August 6th, 2005

Finalists will be responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenses if they choose to attend the Willamette Writers conference in August.

High school and college freshman and sophomores can also join Willamette Writers at the reduced rate of $18 a year.

Willamette Writers' goal is to provide and encourage a creative environment and support system for current and aspiring writers. Since its beginning in 1965, Willamette Writers has provided meeting places for the exchange of ideas and information and has initiated programs designed to help writers increase skills related to the craft of writing. Both published and aspiring writers are invited to join. Dues are $36 a year. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month in Portland, the first Thursday in Eugene, and the first Saturday in Medford.
