Princeton Architectural Press has just published a sweet, little book for Valentine's Day called Love Letters, Lost by Babbette Hines, author of Photobooth.
(PRWEB) January 26, 2005 -- Babbette Hines (who is based in Los Angeles and works at Arcana Books in Santa Monica) has lovingly collected vintage letters spanning the years from the Civil War through World War II on until today, and coupled them with vintage pictures of canoodling couples. Some samples:
"Your letter reacted upon me like a hamburger to a starving man." -- to Darling from Ralph, 4:30 Saturday morning, Beverly Hotel 1330 S. Olive St. Louse Angeles, CA. (1940's)
"Dear Miss Higbee: If I could link a magnetic wire from my brain to yours, you would have a very long electric letter, full of gossip, news and nonsense, with a little dash of tenderness - (this last item is inevitable.)" -- from N.P. Willis to Miss Higbee, January 10, 1849
"My pen is bad, my ink is pale. But my love to you shall never fail." -- February 13, 1852
"I just got home. I lit three candles and some incense. Staring into your eyes in my car with Tool playing was one of the most peaceful moments I have shared with you." -- to Alex from GL (present day)
What's most amazing about this book is that sentiments of love and longing really haven't changed much over the years. Without reading the date, it's difficult to guess when the letter was written.
