AllPeers 2.0, which is based on the Firefox web browser, is explicitly designed to assist in the creation of so-called Web 2.0 applications: software that exploits new trends such as social networking, self-publishing and client-centric computing.
Traditional web applications have been based on a client/server model, with a web browser on the user's computer making requests to a centralized web server, which sends back a response in the form of an HTML web page. More recently, a new model that promises enhanced options for personalization and integration of diverse web apps has gained prominence. Increasingly, users are demanding that their web experience be tailored to their requirements and expectations.
Says AllPeers CEO Cedric Maloux: "Like many users, I run a lot of different software for instant messaging, email, calendaring, bookmarking, sharing media files and so forth. AllPeers is designed to make it far easier for software developers to mix-and-match these types of services to create new, compelling applications that are much more than the sum of their parts. For example, when someone sends me a chat message, I can use AllPeers to show me their shared bookmarks, media files and blog entries as well. This information might be managed by native AllPeers services or by third-party services like del.icio.us and Flickr that offer XML-based APIs."
Unlike most approaches to Web 2.0 development, AllPeers runs not on a centralized server but on the user's own computer, turning it into a personal hub that gives him or her complete control over profile information and personalization options.
"While numerous companies are trying to get users to entrust them with what is, in essence, their identity on the web, our mission is to return control to the user," explains Matthew Gertner, CTO of AllPeers.
"When Firefox burst onto the scene, we recognized it as an important step towards achieving this goal. AllPeers 2.0 is made available under a hybrid open-source license and can be used free of charge for non-commercial applications.
