Fort Worth, TX (PRWEB) October 12, 2005 -- The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) is pleased to announce the winners of its 11th annual Crystal Vision Awards Program. The mission of the Crystal Vision Awards Program is to recognize individuals who promote, expand and encourage the role of women in the construction industry. Edith Stanfield is the recipient of the Crystal Achievement Award, which is awarded to a NAWIC member, and Faye Turner is the recipient of the Crystal Vision Award, which is awarded to a nonmember of NAWIC.
Stanfield is president of S & J Electric (S & J) where she oversees all aspects of corporate management. Stanfield has encouraged and empowered women in construction by influencing policy in agencies, creating company policy at S & J, enacting legislation through local, state and federal governments, and initiating organizational structure at her company.
As a woman who started an electrical subcontracting business at the age of 53, Stanfield is sensitive to the issues women face while working in construction. As the visionary of S & J, she ensures the company is flexible to employees’ needs. Stanfield has been a member of the Fort Worth, Texas, Chapter since 1995. She and her company support NAWIC through their gifts of time, talent and monetary contributions. Stanfield encourages her employees to be involved in the organization and supports their efforts of volunteering their time, attending meetings and promoting the chapter’s efforts in the community.
Turner is the founder and executive director of Women Helping Women (WHW). WHW is a program designed to help women in crisis become self-sufficient through training and job placement in nontraditional trades. Turner began working with WHW full-time in 1999. WHW helps women who are ready to break free from their current situations by stepping up and taking charge of their lives.
Joann Boss, President of the Board of Directors for Women Helping Women, had this to say, “The construction industry is seeking a more diverse work force but has not had great success recruiting and retaining women. Faye Turner successfully broke through long-standing barriers in the industry. Her steadfast belief in the mission of Women Helping Women, the risks she was willing to take to promote something new, and her leadership in recruiting the talent she needed for the organization to succeed are just a few examples of why she is so deserving of this award.”
Stanfield and Turner were honored on September 10, 2005 for their achievements during the Crystal Vision Awards Gala at NAWIC’s 50th Anniversary Celebration and Convention in Grapevine, Texas. The recipients of this year’s Crystal Vision Awards program were selected by a panel of three judges: Doug Curtis, director of chapter development, Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC); Michael Holland, executive vice president, American Council for Construction Education (ACCE); and Norbert W. Young, Jr., FAIA, president, McGraw-Hill Construction.
The Crystal Vision Awards Program was established by NAWIC Past National President Susan Levy in 1995. The program recognizes individuals who promote the role of women in construction through initiatives, policies or legislation. The Crystal Vision Award recognizes a nonmember of NAWIC, and the Crystal Achievement Award recognizes a member of the Association. Since the first visionaries were selected in 1995, this one-of-a-kind program has not only fulfilled its purpose of recognizing exemplary leaders in the industry, it has developed a reputation for honoring individuals who are committed to building a diverse work force amidst the demanding backdrops of the industry today.
