(PRWEB) November 18, 2005 -- The winner of the First Choice Responsible Travel ‘Best in Protected Area/Park’ award, sponsored by Airport Parking and Hotels (www.aph.com) is Basecamp Masai Mara in Kenya. The award was presented for the organisation’s pilot project, “Sustainable Development through Community Based Tourism”.

The highly commended title was awarded to South Hams District Council for the Life into Landscape initiative which provides the opportunity for locals and visitors to get involved with the local countryside and also the Lake District & Conservation Partnership for their work in promoting sustainable tourism by raising much needed funds for vital conservation projects in the Lake District.

Sustainable Development through Community Based Tourism
The Responsible Travel awards recognise companies and organisations in the travel industry that are making a significant commitment to 'responsible' tourism. The award was presented to Mr Martine Saiyialel by APH Direct Marketing Manager, Natalie Rockall at World Travel Market on 16 November 2005.

On receiving the award Martine Saiyialel of Basecamp Masia said: “We are delighted to receive this award from APH and Responsible Travel, we are committed to promoting positive environmental attitudes throughout our organisation and encourage our visitors to do the same. It is great that out continued efforts have been recognised in this way, the award means a lot to everyone who has worked hard to achieve it.”

Nick Caunter, Managing Director of APH commented: “APH is delighted to be sponsoring this award which has highlighted so many fantastic projects. We offer our congratulations to all who were short listed and in particular would like to congratulate Basecamp Masai Mara who truly deserve to win this prestigious award which has recognised the good work the organisation undertakes on a daily basis through its community based tourism projects”.

APH is continually working to minimise the environmental impact of international travel. The organisation is doing this by becoming a carbon balanced organisation* as well as donating money to buy and protect rainforest in the same acreage as its car parks. Through APH’s fundraising efforts with pickatrail and the World Land Trust, APH has donated money to buy and protect a further 600 acres of rainforest.

Travellers who book their airport parking or airport hotels with www.aph.com via the pickatrail website have the added bonus of protecting areas of rainforest at no additional cost to them. Every time a booking is made APH makes a financial contribution to the World Land Trust.
