New Moon® Cares About Girls; Company Offers T-Shirts with Positive Messages

Girls and adults who want girl-friendly alternatives to degrading T-shirts can look to New Moon, which has offered t-shirts and other products carrying encouraging messages for and about girls for eight years. A spate of new companies targeting tween girls have popped up, but New Moon is unique: it’s a small woman-owned company that gives girls real decision-making power.

DULUTH, Minn. (PR Web) November 18, 2005 ─ Thanks to a recent “girlcott” of offensive T-shirt slogans by a group of Pennsylvania girls, we now know that not every girl is satisfied with the offerings at the local mall.

But what’s the alternative? Recently, a wave of companies has begun offering products that carry positive, empowering messages for tween girls, such as:

  • Beacon Street Girls
  • G9 Girl
  • Miss O & Friends
  • Ever Girl
  • Pretty Tough

These companies are following in the footsteps of New Moon Publishing, which has successfully published a magazine by and for girls since 1993 and sold girl-affirming products since 1997.

New Moon just introduced a new limited edition t-shirt bearing the message, “Reach for the Moon.” The company plans to introduce six more limited edition t-shirts in the next year; girls can submit slogan ideas to store@newmoon.org.

Other New Moon product messages include:

  • “Women: We’ll Settle for Half” (of the world) -- designed by Geena Davis for the See Jane Program
  • “Be Your Dream”
  • “If the definition of beautiful gets any thinner, no one will fit.”
  • “Celebrate Girls”
  • “Listen to Girls”

New Moon Co-Founder and Publisher Nancy Gruver wanted New Moon to express girls’ voices and dreams and ambitions, rather than adult goals for them. To accomplish this goal, she gave girls real decision-making power in the company.

New Moon Magazine’s Girls Editorial Board chooses the theme and content for each issue and consults on the design of the magazine. The New Moon Store’s Girls Advisory Board brainstorms product ideas, does research and chooses the products sold in the New Moon Store.

All sales from the New Moon Store help keep New Moon: The Magazine for Girls and Their Dreams advertising-free.
