Austin, TX (PRWEB) December 16, 2005 -– “Where To Now? Folk Music from Many European Lands.” Recently released CD of 14 songs from ten countries features Shirley Johnson on accordion, prim, and vocals.
This eclectic CD demonstrates Shirley’s wide range and versatility of ethnic folk styles.
The CD begins with an accordion and vocal rendition of “Con Te Partiro (Time to Say Goodbye),” giving a folk twist to this popular Italian classical tune. Traditional songs from Shirley’s Croatian heritage (including a song her grandmother used to sing) are followed by a Roma (Gypsy) tune, and folk songs from Bosnia and Bulgaria. Dance melodies range from the ever-loved polka, a foot-stomping Romanian Hora, a Slovakian Czardas, the Russian “Korobushka,” to the middle-eastern sounding Albanian Valle, and the 9/8 beat Daichovo from Bulgaria.
Accompanying Shirley on the CD are Kruno Spisic on brac, vocals, bass, and bugarija; Kalman Magyar on violin and mouth bass; Vjekoslav Dimter on bugarija; Matt Moran on darabouka; and Melinda Hunt on vocals.
All of the songs are sung in the language of the native land. The CD was designed for those unfamiliar with this type of world music. Inside this beautiful six-sided digipak are explanations of the songs as well as anecdotes relating as to how Shirley learned these songs. Renowned ethnic accordionists and singers taught her many of the songs.
Shirley performs regularly at the European Bistro Restaurant in Pflugerville, Texas. She also performs at weddings, parties, and festivals in Austin and other Texas cities.
